Pai Winds Up For Strike on Net Neutrality

April 26th, 2017 by · Leave a Comment

Today FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is expected to unveil his plan for network neutrality. He’ll be speaking this afternoon at the Newseum in Washington DC, and will be discussing in what way and by how much he’ll be pushing to roll back what former chairman Tom Wheeler put in place.

Just how far Pai will go in doing so has been an open question since Trump was elected. He’s been a critic of applying Title II to broadband, and is almost certain to chart a reverse course on that front. What form his alternative might take, if any, will frame the debate for the summer.

Some have speculated his proposal will be for a voluntary system of some sort, and there are indications he’ll aim for leaving much of it up to the FTC rather than his own agency.  Whatever his proposal turns out to be, it will start the clock on a new round of rulemaking that will probably result in some sort of new regime by the end of the year. And before that happens, a whole lot of voices that have been quiet lately are going to get noisy.

With big last mile operators increasingly moving into the content business via M&A, things do have the potential to get messier than 5-10 years ago.
