According to Capacity, construction on the SEA-ME-WE-5 submarine cable is now finished.
The SEA-ME-WE-5 cable system stretches from Marseille in southern France all the way to Singapore via the Mediterranean, Egypt, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean. It connects 16 countries along the way, landing also in Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Djibouti, Oman, UAE, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It has three fiber pairs and is initially designed for 100G wavelengths adding up to a total potential capacity of 24Tbps.
So what’s next? I wonder when SEA-ME-WE-6 will get off the ground. Meeting the demands of bandwidth growth is a neverending job, after all.
