Int’l Roundup: TI Sparkle, NTT, Hibernia, Megaport

Here are a few interesting items from around the world that are worth a note:

TI Sparkle has been very active on the island of Sicily lately. This morning they revealed expanded reach for their Palermo data center to include the MENA cable’s landing station in Mazara. MENA connects Europe with India via the Mediterranean, an Egyption terrestrial leg, the Red Sea, and the Arabian Sea. In recen tyears Sicily has become an important meeting point for Asian, African, and European network infrastructure, complete with its own DE-CIX internet exchange location.  TI Sparkle has been working steadily to pull it all together.

Other major global telecoms may be souring on data centers and the cloud, but NTT is doubling down. Today they unveiled a major upgrade to their Enterprise Cloud. The key new capabilities include hosted private clouds tuned for ‘traditional ICT’, multi-tenant clouds for cloud-native ICT, hybrid cloud environments, SDN-powered interconnection between clouds, and a new management platform. The rollout has started in in their home turf in Japan, with other markets to follow as the year rolls on.

While Hibernia Networks’ attention last year was focused squarely on its new Express transatlantic cable, yesterday they announced an expansion into a rather different part of the world. Hibernia has established a PoP in the Middle Eastern hub of Dubai. The new PoP adds another key global stop in the low latency connectivity solutions they have come to specialize in whether on their own fiber or others. In this case, they now claim to be offering the lowest latency connection between New York and Dubai – a key piece of which no doubt comes from the new Express cable in the Atlantic.

And the Australian interconnection specialist Megaport posted its earnings along with an update to the company’s global expansion progress.  In North America as of yesterday, they had completed 18 locations, with the other 13 due over the next two months.  In Europe they have begun rolling out in seven locations, with six more in the pipeline.  They are now in 52 locations around the world.  To do all that they raised $35M in the second half of last year and they clearly wasted no time putting it to use.
