This October Monday morning saw three interesting internet exchange items cross the wires. After more than a decade’s worth of centralization, the whole IX sector has been spreading its geographical wings.
Central Florida has a new internet exchange this morning. 365 Data Centers and WOW! Business announced the launch of the Tampa Internet Exchange, or TPAIX, which will be unsurprisingly located in downtown Tampa. TPAIX will make it possible for ISPs in the area to exchange traffic locally rather than backhaul to Atlanta or Miami. This is the third such IX out at the edge that 365 Data Centers has been involved with lately, helping launch NashIX and working with SFMIX on an expansion as well. The first data centers hooked up are 365’s facility at 655 Franklin and WOW!’s facility at 400 North Tampa.
The Amsterdam-based AMS-IX has a new partner that will give it greater access down in Latin America. Brazil’s GlobeNet has joined the company’s USA Partner Program with a customer connection in AMS-IX’s New York City exchange. They’ll be able to help hook up customers from their footprint, which reaches down into not just Brazil but also Colombia, Venezuela, and a variety of neighboring companies. AMS-IX now has three US markets, having opened internet exchanges in both the Bay Area and Chicago as well.
And TELEHOUSE says it is taking NYIIX national. With the help of IX Reach, now a part of IIX, TELEHOUSE has now added five new locations in Ashburn, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, and Toronto where customers can now take advantage of fractional ports. All they need now is a few nodes out on the west coast and perhaps down in Florida to complete the set.
