The colocation provider vXchnge has made an inorganic move that significantly increases its footprint. Yesterday they announced the acquisition of 8 data centers from Sungard Availability Services, nearly doubling their reach to a total of 15 markets now.
Sungard had about 40 data centers in markets across North America and Europe, so they’ll still be there of course. But vXchnge will be taking on the personnel operating the 8 purchased facilities as well, boosting their employee base and keeping potential disruption to a minimum.
The company is one of the new breed of data center operators targeting the edge, as opposed to the major data center concentrations. Their goal has been to add an additional 15 markets to the 8 they had, and this deal gets them almost halfway there. Some, such as a project in Philadelphia, are coming via organic buildouts. But clearly inorganic additions are also on the menu.
