Level 3 Brings 29 Pro Sports Venues On-Net

April 13th, 2015 by · 1 Comment

With its annual Superbowl services complete, Level 3’s Vyvx network finished off a bit of organic expansion this week. Level 3 has built fiber into an additional 29 professional sports venues across the USA.

That gives them 55 such venues with fiber out of 100 total, not including the 86 college venues. The sporting world may make a big difference between college and pro for things like March Madness, but bandwidth doesn’t care whether the athletes get a salary or an education out of the action on the court.

Back when Level 3 acquire Vyvx in the WilTel deal, it was almost entirely a satellite thing. That they now have fiber into over half of the pro venues instead shows how much things have changed over the past 9 years. On the other hand, I’m always a bit surprised at how many such things aren’t already on-net in today’s world.

Of course, the big thing right now for Level 3 right now is the integration of tw telecom, which will be going on all year — and on into 2016 of course.  They didn’t mention it, but I think it likely that tw telecom’s fiber played a role in adding a share of those 29 on-net venues.   I haven’t heard much chatter out of Broomfield or Littleton in the five months since they closed the deal, but we get another peak into the state of things in a few weeks when Level 3 reports.

The venues are probably on net with someone non-incumbent, just not L3 or maybe don’t have the components they need for Vyyx.
