DE-CIX has launched another internet exchange, its second of the Spring already. The new exchange will be housed in Interxion’s data center in the southern French city of Marseille.
A variety of submarine cables land in or not far from Marseilles, making it a natural nexus. Carriers from Africa and the Middle East and India can meet up there with their European counterparts quite conveniently, reducing the need to take their traffic further north to the larger internet exchanges in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, London, and Paris.
When paired with the Sicilian IX they announced at the end of March in partnership with TI Sparkle, it is clear that DE-CIX sees an opportunity for peering an interconnection along European bandwidth’s southern Frontier. Given their activity in New York, Dubai, Hamburg, and Munich, it is also clear that they are increasingly confident about a business model of distributed, smaller exchanges — something rather different than they have back in Frankfurt.
