One of the blogging empires that inspired this site’s early days went belly-up today. GigaOm’s about page says the company was unable to pay its creditors, and that operations have ceased. Om Malik and a few others like him practically invented the world of technology and telecom blogging, but all good things do come to an end I suppose.
Truth be told, I had rarely read much on GigaOm anymore. In my opinion, the focus just became too broad. It transformed from one guy’s impressions into an empire, but over time saw its DNA overly diluted. When Om Malik himself moved on to venture capital last year, the writing was on the wall for his former journalistic haunts.
GigaOm had some talented writers who know their stuff and are now surely sending out resumes (if they hadn’t been already). Hopefully they’ll swiftly find new homes in this rapidly changing media world.
I’ve never liked the business model of the multi-author blog news site. It’s so easy to let the expenses balloon, and the traffic that justifies those expenses is forever built on sand – such is the nature of the internet.
FWIW, Telecom Ramblings isn’t going anywhere. I like what I do, I try not to take myself too seriously, I don’t have any creditors, and the support and participation from the telecom and internet infrastructure community continues to be amazing.

I never really cared much for their “journalism”. Well, in the past few years anyway. It was very agenda driven, facts be damned.
Meh – nevertheless, passing of a legacy, I remember back when I went to GigaOm daily, like I do here now
Was never a fan of GigaOm. They were never truly “neutral” in my mind. They must have had a tough time managing expenses for it to end up this way.
Thanks Rob, for the continued efforts you put into Telecom Ramblings.
+1
Neutrality is overrated, I’ve never tried it. Independence, however, truly is priceless.
GigaOm raised $8M just over a year ago and ran out of money already. What I could do with $8M does not include spending it all in one year… just boggles the mind.
Keep doing what you do for our industry, Rob! We are all so grateful for your expertise, insight, and dedication.
Agreed with Karissa- we couldn’t be happier with your blog expertise Rob. Keep rocking it. As for Gigaom– I really like Om- so sad news. Can’t imagine the sadness of watching what you built brick by brick (or is it blog by blog these days?) just go to creditors. Here’s to independence my friend. We are indeed blessed. Talk soon.
