Akamai has made an inorganic move this icy Monday morning aimed at boosting its capabilities in DNS. They have acquired Xerocole, whose specialty is recursive DNS.
DNS is of course a key component of all CDNs, and its mastery is of great importance to Akamai. With the purchase of Xerocole, they bring some talent in-house that can help them keep pace with the ever-increasing amount of bits that need to be accelerated on the internet today.
It’s one of Akamai’s two classic inorganic moves, cherry-picking some adjacent or overlapping technology and talent when it is still young and easy to integrate. The other, of course, is buying litigation-weakened competition — but they haven’t had to do that in a while now.
Terms were not disclosed, other than that the transaction was not material. Xerocole’s 10 employees will move over to Akamai.
