Verizon Looks to the Sun

August 25th, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Seems like direct investments in solar energy are gaining traction with telecom and internet infrastructure of late. Today, Verizon announced plans to nearly double its on-site solar power generation to more than 25 megawatts.

They will be investing another $40M in an existing project, with which some 10.2 megawatts of solar power systems at eight network facilities across California, Maryland, Massachussetts, New Jersey, and New York. SunPower will be handling the design and installation of the actual photovoltaic systems on rooftops, parking structures, etc.

Verizon’s efforts are part of an overall plan to cut its CO2 footprint in half by 2020, and they believe this move will put them on top of the list for telecommunications-generated power.  At least for now anyway, who knows there could be an energy arms race in the offing.

It’s not the first bit of solar power news we heard from the sector.  We saw the data center operator QTS acquire a solar farm along with a data center in central New Jersey from McGraw Hill.  Of course, Verizon has its own energy-hungry data center infrastructure under the Terremark brand.
