Level 3 Communications (NYSE:LVLT, news, filings) is hooking up one of the smallest but most glamorous countries in the world. Under an agreement with Monaco Telecom, the global internet operator will be bringing big bandwidth to James Bond’s favorite resort city-state on the Riviera.
Level 3 will be opening a PoP in the city, from which it will provide access to its Tier 1 backbone to customers of Monaco Telecom. It will also gain direct access to the Europe-India Gateway cable, which has a landing station in the principality.
Level 3 has been quietly expanding its reach in Europe this year via dark fiber and partnerships, according to the grapevine anyway. I still expect they will take a swing at some consolidation on the continent, and I’d be surprised if they weren’t taking a hard look at GTS Central Europe since they seem to be on the table.
