Here on Telecom Ramblings I have for some time been trying to figure out how to add more voices to the conversation from within the industry beyond the wonderful but often anonymous comments we receive. To that end, today I am introducing a new type of article: the Industry Viewpoint.
The idea is to let industry professionals and their organizations share insights on the issues of the day in telecom and internet infrastructure. The subject could be the state of a new technology, regulatory developments or lack thereof, a response to a related article in the press, an issue that is being neglected by the media, etc.
What it is not is an opportunity to promote new product launches, case studies, contract wins, white papers etc. This is not a channel for PR, but for giving perspectives and prompting respectful discussion via original material. An Industry Viewpoint must endeavor to say something, not sell something. All submissions will be judged in that light.
The difference between an Industry Viewpoint and a guest post is the source: the former is directly or indirectly from a corporate entity from in or around the sector, and the latter is from an independent blogger, journalist, or other media outlet. We have had guest articles in the past that fit the Industry Viewpoint category, and they will be marked as such:
- Bank Street Perspective on the Abovenet/Zayo Deal
- Subsea Quakes and TransAtlantic Diversity
- Core Competencies and the Reshaping of an Industry
When there is enough interest, I would love to get more than one article on the same subject for added depth. I would welcome suggestions regarding topics that might encourage such a thing, or how to better structure this new feature so as to make Ramblings better.

Rob, would submissions by well-respected figures in the industry who work for or run relevant companies be considered, or is this strictly open only to other journalists/bloggers/etc.?
Mark, such submissions are what this feature hope to lure in! Witness yesterday’s article from Level 3.
I think it’s a great idea. I’m of the opinion that great ideas come from all levels and usually only the top levels are heard. What would the submission process be? People submit ideas and write an article after you’ve chosen which you’d like to feature?
Hi Cindy. The process is fairly simple at the momtn. Just send the proposed topic or an abstract to me at info@telecomramblings.com and we’ll go from there on a case by case basis.
