They may have had a rough fiscal Q3 report in the eyes of the market, but Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN, news, filings) has spent the week on offense, at least in terms of PRs. Along with yesterday’s win at XO, on Tuesday they signed Vimpelcom and today it was Janet6.
Russian-based Vimpelcom is using their packet-optical platform and coherent technology to upgrade 10,700km of its network. They’ve added additional 40Gbps wavelengths its Moscow-Urals, Urals-Siberia, and the southern part of the Western Russia Network. They’re also putting in 100G on 3,000km of fiber out in the far east.
And the UK’s national R&E network, Janet6, has selected their coherent 100G to power their next generation network buildout. The project, which goes live next October, will be hooking up a host of universities, research institutions, and the national school network.
