Carrier Ethernet Exchange specialist CENX (news) has found itself yet another big name backer. Today they revealed that the Swedish-based vendor Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC, news, filings) participated in their latest round of financing. Earlier this summer it was Verizon’s investment arm along with Mesirow Financial that joined with the original trio of DCM< highland, and Wasatch.
The Ethernet Exchange business model has definitely been in flux over the past year. For its part, CENX has been focusing on automation of the systems and processes associated with intercarrier Ethernet connectivity, especially for backhaul management.
That CENX has found support from both a major global carrier and a major global vendor this year suggests that there is more yet to this story. Verizon and Ericsson may perhaps be looking for more direct involvement in the development of Ethernet Exchange technology than they would get working with Equinix. I’m curious to see where it may lead.
