Comcast’s Business VoIP Cloud Rolls In

March 27th, 2012 by · 3 Comments

Remember about two years ago when cable giant Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA, news, filings) bought up the small but dynamic wholesale VoIP services provider New Global Telecom?  Since then Comcast has made waves in the metro Ethernet side of the enterprise market, but not so much with VoIP. Well, they took their time about it but they appear to be making their NGT-powered move now.

According to the Philadelphia Business Journal this morning, Comcast Business Class is launching a cloud-based called VoiceEdge. Initially in the northeast, the offering is being aimed at enterprises of 15-250 employees. It includes various hosted UC features that derive at least in part from NGT’s hosted PBX solution.

Also intriguing though is this bit from the article:

Customers that sign three-year contracts get phones by Pleasanton, Calif.-based Polycom Inc. that enable the transmission and reception of a wider range of frequencies than normal telephones.

That sounds like Comcast’s VoiceEdge launch includes HD Voice capability.  There were rumblings of that possibility for a year, perhaps now come to fruition.

I think more and more small businesses are taking to call recording software these days as it allows them to trackback on past conversations and safeguard themselves more. Definitely worth looking into if you handle customer calls directly.
