Poll: What To Do About SOPA?

January 18th, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Today you’ll notice many big websites are blacked out in protest of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act.  Big internet companies are angry with the legislation, which is backed by big media, because they think it will do damage to the the internet in all sorts of ways and because they weren’t allowed at the table to prevent those ways when it was drafted.    Instead of a blackout, I thought I’d run a quick poll to see what the telecom and fiber world thinks of all this:

As for my own opinion, I think there’s a need for better IP protections than we currently have in place but I don’t think the media companies are going about it the right way.  Honestly, so many of their efforts have been designed to make work for other people without sufficient recourse by the unfairly affected that I just don’t trust them.  If we can slow things down and make everything transparent, maybe we can fix it.  For now, today’s blackout shows that the atmosphere out there is still quite poisonous.

Telecom Ramblings is not blacking out today, partly because we’re not big enough to absorb  the traffic and revenue hit, and partly because I have a cold and really don’t want to code a new page just for a one-day protest stunt.
