IP Networks, which operates a rather low profile metro fiber footprint in the San Francisco Bay Area, has signed on with Tinet and its EtherCloud. Tinet’s EtherCloud was unveiled back in April, and represents the evolution of Neutral Tandem’s earlier entry into the Ethernet Exchange market.
Via EtherCloud they’ll be able to expand their customer universe further than they could have gone on their own. They’ll also be able to offer their existing customers Ethernet connectivity beyond their own footprint without having to set up E-NNIs with everyone else along the way.
We don’t hear too often from IP Networks, despite the fact that it is one of the few independent, alternative fiber operators in a key bandwidth market. Their name didn’t turn up often in consolidation rumors last year either. Several years back though they won a substantial T-Mobile USA backhaul deal for the region.

Is this news that L3 acquired them?
Ummm, L3 acquired IP Networks Inc? I haven’t heard that, can anyone confirm?
The California PUC docket number is A13-01-001 The link to the documents in this case is here:
http://delaps1.cpuc.ca.gov/CPUCProceedingLookup/f?p=401:57:1069528801205601::NO
The application states: “On December 20, 2012, IPN and Level 3 Communications, LLC, a California certificated telecommunications carrier (”Level 3”), entered into a Merger Agreement (the “Merger Agreement”) pursuant to which, subject to the terms and conditions thereof, Level 3 will acquire 100% of the outstanding capital stock of IPN.”

The merger is subject to PUC approval of changes to the master license and IRU agreement between IP Networks and Pacific Gas & Electric that extend the agreement and adds Level 3 as a party. The site does not show that the PUC has approved the changes to the agreement.
Thanks Don!
