Telx Moves to Interconnect the Clouds, Voxel and Softlayer Sign Up

June 7th, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Datacenter and interconnection provider Telx Group (news, filings) is making its move this week on the cloud, or more specifically on how clouds connect with their users, with each other, and with their own distributed components.  That’s a very hot subject right now with both network and datacenter operators, as optimizing and managing such connectivity is not a trivial problem when you try to scale this sort of thing.

Telx unveiled their new Cloud Connection Centers and a parallel community entitled cloudXchange.  The former represents a cloud-optimized suite of Telx facilities and products including but not limited to their Ethernet Exchange offerings, which can power private SLA’d connections.  The latter is about the ecosystem, i.e. bringing together the various cloud providers, network operators, and enterprise customers.  As Telx has demonstrated with its other interconnection services in the past, if you get enough people to interconnect in a common place with common priorities, the nexus you create can gain a life of its own.

To that end, Telx also announced two of the initial members of the cloudXchange community: Softlayer and Voxel.  Softlayer has been one of the more active players in the dedicated server and hosting space for several years, and has lately been moving rapidly into the cloud and IaaS space.  I have run into Voxel less often although I expect that will be changing.  They will be leveraging the community to help expand their hybrid cloud services push.

GI Partners own both Telx and Softlayer, so may be the reason those two are working together. GI also is a part owner of Viawest, so we’ll see if it makes sense for VW to partner up with the other two tech investments.

Voxel is owned by Seaport Capital, who was an early investor in Peak 10 as well as Switch & Data.
