Yesterday the FCC posted an article on their Blogband blog attributed jointly to all five commissioners, promising yet again to take on issues that have befuddled it for a decade or more – intercarrier compensation and universal service. They started looking at them again last month of course, but the first step is the one they’ve never had a problem with. Yesterday they began with another thing the FCC is good at: workshops, or in their words “open, public workshops to identify solutions to key issues.” As if we don’t already know the key issues by this time? Ah well, bureaucrats will be bureaucrats.
But do they really mean it this time? Is there a consensus building now to do what must be done? Or are we just seeing the preparations for a transition to a more modern way to waste money while pretending to solve a problem? Yes, I’m cynical – and I shall remain so until I see something more than a publicly streamed workshop.
I doubt very much that the political will exists right now to do anything other than to posture for yet another election – which is still almost two years away. But on the other hand, at least we’ll have something other than network neutrality to talk about for a while.
