Three technology and data giants, Dell, Equinix, and Rackspace, teamed up today for the launch of an OpenStack cloud demonstration and test environment. OpenStack is a collection of open source tech for scalable public and private clouds that was originally founded by RackSpace and NASA. The geographically dispersed demo and test environment will help speed the deployment of OpenStack proof of concepts.
Dell, Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings), and Rackspace Hosting (NYSE:RAX, news, filings) each bring their own area of expertise to the project. Dell provides its cloud optimized PowerEdge C intel based servers. Equinix provides colocation space in two of its IBXs – Silicon Valley and Ashburn – plus its delivery platform to 90 others across 35 metro markets. And Rackspace adds its Cloud Bulders services and support as well as a datacenter location of its own – Chicago.
No network operator in that group yet though. One would think connectivity would be a crucial point, but that’s just me. I suppose. Equinix is certainly well connected enough that I guess there won’t be any difficulties on that end.
