Today TW Telecom (NASDAQ:TWTC, news, filings) announced a multi-year contract with the US Air Force to supply services to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, 20 miles southeast of Washington DC. That’s the home base of Air Force One as well as the 89 Airlift Wing, an air base that gets more than its fair share of high profile visitors and which has some 20,000 military and civilians on-site.
For its part, tw telecom will be providing as many as 30,000 voice lines as well as data services for secure internet access. 30K lines in one shot is a pretty substantial deal, although it isn’t exactly high bandwidth. The company has had quite a bit of luck with military bases across the country, but I’ll bet the competitive bidding process was more closely fought on this one given the many regional providers in the DC area with substantial fiber and other facilities.

I love the marketing speak of “secure internet access” — does that mean anything you do on the internet is “secure”?
Is this a new sale or a renewal … TW Telecom does a lot of military.
