In the data center sector, there have been several interesting news items this week.
QTS has purchased a huge former semiconductor plant in Richmond VA that it plans to convert into data center space. The former Qimonda facility cost just $12M, and comes with some 1.2M total square feet of space spread across two fabs, a manufacturing area and office space. Data Center Knowledge has additional details. Richmond isn’t a huge data center destination, but it is close enough to the booming northern Virginia colocation market that it might be considered a suburb and it’s probably cheaper to build out in.
Equinix (NASDAQ:EQIX, news, filings) has opened its third IBX center in Paris. The PA-3 facility is located at the Saint Denis campus, and will add another 116,230 square feet to their Paris footprint when fully built out. Seems like another one springs up somewhere monthly. The next new Equinix facility to come online in Europe will be over in Zurich sometime later this quarter. Also, Switch and Data, which will likely be a part of the Equinix empire in a few weeks, won a nice contract with Peerless Network, Inc for space in Seattle, Cleveland, and Indianapolis.
And Digital Realty Trust (NYSE:DLR, news, filings) has signed two turnkey data center leases at its recently completed facility in Ashburn VA. Of the total 132,300 square feet available, one lease took out 29,000 square feet, while the other was for four PODs totaling 89,000 square feet plus another 1,200 for office space. The space should be finished in Q3 and Q4. Not much left there to sell, so of course the focus now moves to yet more space being built at two other facilities that come online later this year and early next. Digital Realty has also increased power capacity to its 120 East Van Buren facility in Phoenix, now totaling 31.4MW. Bolstered by the additional power, they are now converting another 30K square feet.
