Alcatel-Lucent Claims Wins At NTT, Cox

August 5th, 2009 by · 1 Comment

Telecommunications equipment giant Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU, news, filings) has had two nice wins in the last two days.  Yesterday the company announced its routers have been selected by NTT Communications (NYSE:NTT, news, filings) to support Japan’s first MPLS-based IPv6 IP-VPN service.  NTT has been on the forefront of the IPv6 movement, especially in Japan where it is really starting to take hold.  Enterprise customers there now have a migration path for when IPv4 addresses run out, or perhaps more precisely when they become scarce and expensive as will probably happen first outside the US.

Then in a release this morning, Alcatel-Lucent claimed another IP/MPLS win for its edge routers.  Cox Business will use the equipment to support its business Ethernet services.  Of the cable MSOs, Cox has been one of the most aggressive in taking advantage of its metro footprint to address the business marketplace, and it claims the #4 position in customer Ethernet ports.  I wish I had more information about its footprint overall, but there isn’t much public information available beyond the PRs.

For years now the router scene has been the Cisco and Juniper show, while Alcatel-Lucent just tried to stay in the game after the Lucent merger with restructure after restructure.  Neither of these wins are small potatoes, are they off the injured reserve list at last?
